In space flight, press Z (default) to enter combat mode. You can press 9 (default) in order to rally your units to attack your current target.
You can have spare units in your inventory to replace losses during combat.
During space flights, deploying fleets such as Corvettes will consume your energy, even if Icarus himself stays out of combat. Prepare accordingly.
