Summary

Crude Oil is one of the natural resources. It appears on Planets that are life bearing, including the starter Planet. It is extracted from Crude Oil Seeps with an Oil Extractor.

It is refined into Refined Oil and Hydrogen in the Oil Refinery via the Plasma Refining recipe.

During the time that an Oil Extractor is operating, the Crude Oil Seep's production rate gradually decreases over time, according to its half-life, until it reaches a minimum production rate of 0.1/s.[1] The default half-life is 12 hours of continuous extraction, without the Veins Utilization upgrade.

Production Upgrades

Crude Oil production is affected by the Veins Utilization chain of upgrades, with each level giving a flat +10% to production.

As each Crude Oil Seep has its own production rate, the below table is for a base rate of 1/s. Multiply accordingly for seeps with different rates.

Trivia

  • The amount of Crude Oil you get per second is dependent on the Crude Oil Seep you are extracting from.
  • The starting planet typically has a total of around 30/s production split across all Crude Oil Seeps.
  • Crude Oil burns for 1.5s in the Thermal Power Station when at full load, consuming 40 Crude Oil per minute. 4.05 MJ * 0.8 fuel efficiency / 2.16 MW = 1.5 s
  • While the production of a crude oil seep is infinite with a minimum of 0.1/s, the amount produced before reaching this minimum is: (Production/s - 0.1) * Half_Life(hours) * 3600. You can replace the 0.1 by which ever minimum production you want to calculate the amount of oil for (i.e starting with 3/s crude oil, you will get (3 - 1) * 12 * 3600 = 86400 crude oil with no Veins Utilization upgrade with a production of at least 1/s).

Player Tips & Tricks

  • Processing Crude Oil via Plasma Refining results in a net energy gain if the products are used as fuel, compared to burning Crude Oil directly.
  • When the Hydrogen for Energy Matrix production is entirely derived from Plasma refining the resulting Oil surplus will suffice for a complete playthrough up to Mission complete. This also circumvents issues with Hydrogen management, is overall energy conserving, preserves Oil supply and requires the least amount of facilities compared to other solutions.

Historical

  • Prior to Patch 0.7.18.6914, the production rate of Crude Oil Seeps did not decrease over time.
