Summary

The Mini Fusion Power Plant consumes Deuteron Fuel Rods to generate electrical power by nuclear fusion. It is identical in shape and size to the Thermal Power Plant but has ~7x the power output and consumes its fuel substantially slower (1 rod every 40 seconds at full load).

Fusion power is a potent and extremely compact way of supplying energy to a power grid (a 6x6 proliferated fusion plant setup produces over 1 GW), and automatically adjusts to grid load, saving fuel when load is low. The biggest roadblock in its usage is the logistical problem of deuteron fuel rod manufacture; deuterium is difficult to acquire and logistically cumbersome, super-magnetic rings have a complex production chain, and titanium alloy necessitates either finding a planet with titanium and crude oil (for the sulfur) or setting up interplanetary shipments of one of the ingredients.

Player Tips & Tricks

  1. Mini Fusion Power Stations put out a fair amount of power, 15 MW. They do not depend on wind or solar, and therefore are useful anywhere.
  2. A useful trick is carry one with you (and Deuteron Fuel Rods) to help to quickly charge a newly placed Interstellar Logistics Station, or several Wireless Power Towers to quickly recharge your mech. Then when you are done, pick it up and move along…
